What to Do If a THC Edible Feels Stronger Than You Expected

Sometimes a THC edible can feel stronger than you expected. If that happens, focus on keeping yourself safe and making the environment as simple and comfortable as possible.

Do not take more THC

Stop adding cannabis. Because edibles can continue building over time, taking another serving can make the experience stronger.

Move to a safe, comfortable setting

Sit or lie down somewhere calm. Reduce unnecessary stimulation if that feels helpful. Stay away from driving, cycling, swimming, cooking over an open flame, operating equipment, or anything else that requires coordination or quick reactions.

Avoid alcohol or other intoxicating substances

Do not try to “balance out” the experience by adding alcohol or another intoxicating substance. Combining substances can increase impairment.

Stay with someone you trust if you need support

If you feel unsettled, being with a calm, trusted person can make the situation easier to manage while the effects pass.

Know when to get help

Seek urgent medical help if you or someone with you has severe symptoms, is difficult to wake, has trouble breathing, has a seizure, or is otherwise in immediate danger.

In the United States, you can contact Poison Control at 1-800-222-1222 for guidance about a possible cannabis overexposure. Call 911 for an emergency.

Use the experience to adjust next time

Once you are feeling back to normal, note what you took, how much, what you had eaten, your timing, and your setting. You may decide that a lower Honey Bloom Level or smaller serving is a better starting point next time.
